Sapphire Energy Selects OSIsoft’s PI System for Strategic IT Infrastructure

SAN LEANDRO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- OSIsoft, LLC, provider of the PI System™, the leading infrastructure for streaming data and events, today announced the implementation of its PI System at Sapphire Energy’s New Mexico-based facilities, including the Green Crude Farm in Columbus and the Research and Development facility in Las Cruces. Designed to offer seamless integration and support for the enterprise technology landscape, OSIsoft’s PI System will provide Sapphire Energy with real-time combined data and situational awareness to enable quicker and more precise operational decisions.

Sapphire Energy, one of the world leaders in algae-based Green Crude oil production, has launched the world's first active and on-schedule commercial demonstration scale algae-to-energy facility, known as the Green Crude Farm, or the Integrated Algal BioRefinery (IABR). The Green Crude farm integrates the entire value chain of algae-based fuel, from cultivation to production to extraction of ready-to-refine Green Crude.

“Sapphire Energy is continuously looking to implement technologies that can greatly improve our operational efficiency,” says Dean Venardos, Vice President of Operations at Sapphire Energy. “OSIsoft’s PI System enables us to quickly gather, process, and evaluate data, and in turn, make better, more intuitive decisions as we move our business forward.”

“The selection of the PI System by Sapphire continues to validate OSIsoft’s strong value proposition in renewables which require flexibility, scalability, security, and availability. Adding algae derived biofuels to the portfolio of wind, hydro, solar, ethanol, and biodiesel validates these attributes of the PI System™ in renewables,” states Doug Taylor, Manager for Renewables at OSIsoft.

Craig Harclerode, Doug’s counterpart in the O&G Fuels Value Chain, adds “I am excited about the opportunity for the PI System to help Sapphire Energy grow into an industry leader and add to the energy mix. The PI System was first installed in a refinery 32 years ago and adding the production of Green Crude represents yet another chapter in the history of OSIsoft. This continues to demonstrate the stability and unwavering vision of providing the best agnostic and open infrastructure for streaming data and events”.

About Sapphire Energy

San Diego-based Sapphire Energy is pioneering an entirely new industry – Green Crude production—with the potential to profoundly change America’s energy and petrochemical landscape for the better. Sapphire’s products and processes in this category differ significantly from other forms of biofuel because they are made solely from photosynthetic microorganisms (algae and cyanobacteria), using sunlight and CO2 as their feedstock; are not dependent on food crops or valuable farmland; do not use potable water; do not result in biodiesel or ethanol; enhance and replace petroleum-based products; are compatible with existing infrastructure; and are low carbon, renewable and scalable. Sapphire has an R&D facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and is currently operating the first Integrated Algal BioRefinery in Columbus, New Mexico. For more information, visit www.sapphireenergy.com.
