Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Announces Support for Second Phase of Green Button Initiative

“Green Button Connect My Data” feature will provide efficient way for customers to take advantage of energy programs from third parties and save more on energy bills

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) today announced its support for the next phase of the national Green Button initiative, called “Green Button Connect My Data.” The White House-inspired, industry-led Green Button initiative allows customers to download their own household energy data from participating utilities in a standardized format. Customers can then choose to provide their usage information to third parties such as energy suppliers and other energy service companies, in order to be matched with programs that can help them reduce their energy costs. With the additional “Green Button Connect My Data” capability, in the near future, customers will be able to authorize automated data exchanges from their utility to an authorized third party, further facilitating participation in programs that can help them take advantage of savings.

“Our goal is to make it easy and convenient for BGE customers to become smarter energy consumers,” said Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “The Green Button initiative and the upcoming 'Green Button Connect My Data' feature will provide customer access to tools and innovative BGE programs that can help customers become more energy efficient, resulting in meaningful savings on their monthly bills.”

BGE is in the process of installing two million smart meters and meter devices across BGE’s central Maryland service territory. This month, BGE will launch an online suite of tools that will allow customers with smart meters to view their electric and gas usage patterns within 24 hours, allowing them to make changes that can lead to lower bills. The online tools will also provide access to personalized energy savings tips. BGE will incorporate the initial Green Button concept when the energy management tools launch this month, so customers will be able to download their information and send it to third party energy companies. BGE looks to work with industry partners to incorporate the “Green Button Connect My Data” functionality in the near future.
