DENVER, Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Jeff Masingill, vice president, sales and marketing, RTI Remmele Engineering Inc., New Brighton, MN, will serve as the moderator for the Commercial Aerospace session, which is sponsored by RTI International Metals, Inc., Pittsburgh. RTI Remmele produces titanium fabricated products and machined components.
Commercial aerospace is the engine that, quite literally, drives the international titanium market. Panelists will discuss how their organizations manage the titanium acquisition process as well as current and future uses of titanium in their product mix.
"Speakers will talk about challenges that the titanium market faces, along with some unique perspective as it relates to the future needs of the supply chain," Masingill said, noting there is a need for innovation in the raw material sector. "As commercial and aero-engine market conditions evolve, there is a greater need for higher performing titanium alloys, which can withstand the rigors of more demanding environments."
Commercial jet platforms represent a substantial level of demand for titanium in the coming years, such as Boeing's recently launched 787 Dreamliner and Airbus' A350 and A380, scheduled to be commercially unveiled in 2013-14. Titanium remains the material of choice for precision jet engine components; structural assemblies in the airframe and landing systems; forged-wing structures; fasteners, springs and hydraulic tubing; and engine nacelles.
Maryse Ingenito, director, global strategic sourcing, United Technologies Corp. (UTC) will share insights on the company's newly formed UTAS (Hamilton Sundstrand & Goodrich) business unit. Ingenito will focus on the commercial engine sector and provide an overview on a supply-chain initiative for UTC vendors.
Ernie M. Crist, director of process and product development at RTI International Metals, in a paper co-authored by Dr. Sesh Tamirisa, principal engineer, research and development, will outline the use of the advanced titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Sn-2Zr-2Mo-2Cr (Ti-62222) for commercial aerospace applications. Crist will point out that next-generation commercial aircraft and engine requirements are pushing performance needs beyond the upper limits of the workhorse alloy titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V, which is spurring the development of advanced alloy solutions.
Crist will provide an overview of RTI's Ti-62222 alloy capabilities to address near-term commercial aerospace requirements. Ti-62222 is a balanced alpha/beta titanium alloy produced in standard wrought product forms such as billet, plate, and sheet. Potential applications of this alloy include thick plate for airframe structural parts such as bulkheads, frames, spars, and ribs; sheet and thin plate for skin structures and superplastic parts; and forged products for engine components at moderate service temperatures.
Thaleb Meraoumia, an executive with French aerospace manufacturer Dassault Aviation, will provide a forecast of business jet sales over the next 10 years along with anticipated titanium volume used per aircraft.
