Taiwan stocks open up, lifted by defensive plays

TAIPEI, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks rose 0.36 percent on Tuesday, joining other Asian bourses in gains after an unexpected expansion in U.S. factory activity buoyed sentiment, with defensive plays such as transport

and tourism shares among the top gainers. The main TAIEX index rose 27.38 points to 7,703.10, after ending down 0.51 percent in the previous session. Electronics shares gained 0.32 percent, while financial counters were up 0.56 percent. The Taiwan dollar was up by T$0.083 to trade at T$29.319.

Foreign investors were net buyers on Monday, picking up T$553 million.
