BALTIMORE -- A federal judge has ruled that Baltimore County's pension system discriminated against beneficiaries because older workers were required to pay more toward their retirement than younger workers.
U.S. District Judge Benson Everett Legg agreed that the county system violated the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the county in 2007 on behalf of two retired corrections officers.
The county changed its pension system in 2007 so that newly hired workers contributed to the retirement system at a flat rate.
County officials are reviewing the decision and don't know yet how much the case could cost the county.
In 2009 the same federal court ruled in favor of the county, but the EEOC appealed and the case was returned.
