SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

With October brings National Orthodontic Health Month and Halloween, the scariest time of year for many orthodontists and a nightmare for kids that wear metal braces and have to tell their parents (who may have invested thousands) that they broke a wire, bent a bracket, or worse.

Every Halloween, orthodontists see a significant increase in the number of emergency visits from patients who don't heed their advice to avoid forbidden treats.

In a recent survey of orthodontists, 78 percent reported an increase of at least 10 percent more emergency visits on Halloween and the days following. Another 20 percent reported a 25 percent increase in emergency visits.

New York City-based orthodontist, Dr. Joseph Hung is available to offer advice for Happy Halloween haunting that people can "sink their teeth into." He can discuss the following:

  • Candy and treats orthodontists fear most and why; examples of worst and most-surprising offenders
  • Suggestions for orthodontic-friendly options that will keep parents and their teens from knocking at their orthodontist's door on or after Halloween
  • Tips for staying out of the orthodontist chair in between scheduled appointments – one of the easiest ways is with removable braces, like Invisalign, that let patients enjoy foods and activities, and make maintaining oral health easier than with other braces options
  • Graphic details of the frightening damage Halloween treats can cause to different types of braces
  • Horror stories on what happens when kids that wear metal braces neglect their oral health – especially during Halloween season
