New Hires Support Firm’s Outsourcing-Based Growth and Expansion into India, Singapore and Ireland
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Axiom, a 1,000 person new model firm that helps General Counsel manage their workload more effectively, today announced the result of its efforts to significantly strengthen its management team with the addition of key, global new hires. These new Axiom executives, all of whom joined the firm in 2012, will serve to further complement and nurture Axiom’s growth within the legal marketplace.
Most recently, that growth resulted in a staggering 62% increase in year-over-year (2011 v 2010) firm revenue figures. The firm financials represent growth on a global scale as do the firm’s most recent and notable hires who span Axiom’s regional offices and delivery centers in America, Asia and Europe.
With respect to its global reach, Axiom now serves nearly half of the Fortune 100 across 10 offices and 4 delivery centers. The firm practices in a wide-range of industries and specialties through three forms of engagement that include:
- Insourcing of secondees
- End-to-end outsourcing of portions of or entire functions from in-house legal departments managed through its newly formed Managed Services division
- Complex projects, ranging from managing data discovery in response to civil litigation and criminal/regulatory investigations, to managing large-scale analysis and corresponding negotiation of contracts in response to regulatory and/or post-merger or post-disposition reconciliations
Many of Axiom’s most notable new hires are in support of the growing, recently formed Managed Services division. As Executive Vice President (EVP) of Managed Services, Rick Teague, is responsible for overseeing large, hyper-complex outsourcing arrangements for clients including HP, Credit Suisse, Kraft and Vodafone. It’s a nascent but thriving business unit, seeing unprecedented year-over-year growth of 288% (from fiscal year 2010 to fiscal year 2011).
“Managed Services introduces a paradigm that is entirely counter to law-firm DNA (innovation, process orientation, performance metrics, etc.) that engages our GC clients in real-life problem solving on issues about which they care and are, more recently, measured,” said Teague. “Our clients are responding to this new approach to the delivery of legal services en masse. In support of both our growth and our mission to consistently innovate, we seek to hire ‘Axiomites’ with a unique, hybrid business/legal background who can bring fresh ideas about the efficient delivery of legal service to our firm and our clients. Our new hires are just that.”
One such hire is Mark Trepanier who, as EVP of Managed Services, Client Delivery has ultimate accountability for ensuring that Axiom consistently meets or exceeds its managed project client commitments in a sustainable way. Consistent with the firm’s approach to Managed Services (the intelligent application of project management and process innovation techniques to the delivery of legal work), Trepanier brings an extensive management consulting background to the firm. In fact, as one of the premier client delivery executives in the world today, Trepanier has over 25-years of leadership experience in consulting and services-related BPO with organizations including KPMG, Accenture, Epiphany, Exult and EDS. In many of those positions, Trepanier was tasked with global responsibility for operations and outsourcing . In his new role, he will be able to leverage that deep reservoir of global experience.
Indeed, Axiom’s approach to client service and delivery has become increasingly more global, as has its footprint. In 2012, Axiom officially opened its newest delivery center in Belfast. Russell Sheldon, a newly hired Vice President of Managed Services based in London was brought onboard to play a key leadership role in that delivery center, which is unique in the marketplace because its staff is entirely comprised of client-facing, fee-earning teams. Through his work as Operations Director of the Managed Legal Service group at BLP, and at Hewitt Associates prior, Sheldon brings a management consulting background to his new position as well as deep outsourcing experience.
Moving from Ireland to India, Ajanta Roy has been hired to lead Axiom’s delivery center in Gurgaon, where the firm plans to open a Centre of Excellence. Modeled on Axiom’s other successful delivery centers, Gurgaon will house several client-dedicated teams serving global companies. Roy will oversee a delivery center that will support the firm’s existing global clients, rather than ones located in India and will also serve as the company’s global center for reporting and data analytics. She brings to the position deep experience in the legal services sector having served in senior positions with both Elevate and UnitedLex.
Just as India has become a key part of Axiom’s strategic growth, so too has Asia, where Mark Velthuis has been appointed the region’s Managing Director. It is a region Mark has extensive experience with, having overseen British Telecom’s aggregate operations in China and deal structuring in China as well as Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. Initially, Mark will be based in Hong Kong, where Axiom opened an office in 2010. There, he will serve to solidify and expand Axiom’s footprint in Asia and act as a senior voice for regional clients who are trying to develop a legal strategy to support international growth into the region. He will also oversee Axiom’s expansion into Singapore. The office will work alongside Axiom's existing Hong Kong base to support the firm's clients with a presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
Finally, Brian Bayne rounds out the roster of Axiom new hires as another part of the firm’s growth in key strategic, regional markets, having joined as General Manager of the Houston office. As with many of the other new Axiom hires, Bayne also brings a consulting background to his role where he will be responsible for helping Texas-based General Counsel manage their workload more effectively. Bayne brings particular expertise and experience in the oil and gas industries, most recently serving as the North American Business Solutions Director for Petroleum, Chemicals and Industrial Products at IBM. His vast experience in these industries will help serve the very specific and unique legal needs of clients within this sector.
“Axiom is on the same mission we have always been on – to inspire, facilitate and participate in the transformation of the legal industry,” said Mark Harris, CEO. “We’re simply doing it on a much larger global scale and, because of Managed Services, in a much more profound way than ever before. Our ability to innovate and transform the industry hinges on making sure that we have the right mix of people to support our growth and inspire our clients. I am proud to say that all the new 2012 additions to the Axiom team are, in fact, the ‘right people.” I look forward to continuing the Axiom journey with them as key part of our team moving forward.”
