The New Gold exchange traded fund ticks up 1.1 percent to 146.80 rand, after earlier hitting a lifetime high of 146.90 rand. New Gold, which tracks the rand price of gold, has been lifted by a record run in bullion's rand price.

Gold's price in rand hit a record high of 15,185.80 rand an ounce, as a wave of strikes continued to grip the country's mining industry.

Shares in Gold One International fall more than 1 percent in Johannesburg as the bullion producer suspends illegally striking workers at its Ezulwini mine in South Africa.

Gold One International, which is also listed in Australia , is down 1.37 percent at 3.60 rand.

A wave of illegal mine strikes has been roiling Africa's biggest economy in recent weeks, hitting mining stocks on fears of production losses or expensive wage deals with striking workers.
