The S&P 500 rose for a fourth session after a report suggested improvement in the labor market ahead of Friday's closely watched monthly payrolls report.

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose only slightly last week after a big drop the week before, keeping in place a trend that indicated a mild improvement in the labor market.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 79.33 points, or 0.59 percent, to 13,573.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 8.34 points, or 0.57 percent, to 1,459.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 6.10 points, or 0.19 percent, to 3,141.40.

** COLLABRX INC , $6.80, up 79.4 pct (1229 ET)

The data analytics company focused on genomics entered into a development and commercialization partnership agreement with Life Technologies Corp , the maker of tools and genetic testing equipment. The company was valued at $6.4 million at Wednesday's close.

** NUVASIVE INC , $15.28, down 32.4 pct (1228 ET)

The medical device maker estimated third-quarter revenue below its earlier forecast, saying "an unusually high" number of customers turned to competitors.

RBC Capital Markets downgraded the company to "underperform" from "outperform," while Canaccord Genuity, Robert W. Baird & Co, Mizuho Securities USA, BMO Capital Markets and ThinkEquity Llc cut their price targets on the stock.

Data-integration software maker Informatica rattled investors with a warning on Thursday about worsening business conditions in Europe. This weighed on other U.S. tech stocks too.

A slew of brokerages cut their price targets on the stock, saying the weak economy will continue to weigh on the company that has been plagued by operating problems and slow growth in its computers and printers businesses.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's support of the coal industry during his debate with President Obama sent coal stocks higher, analysts said.

"It's amazing what 15 words about coal in a presidential debate can do for the stocks," said Michael Dudas of Sterne Agee.

Shares of U.S. hospital operators fell after Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's strong showing in Wednesday's presidential debate raised doubts about the future of President Obama's healthcare reform.

** BROADWALK PIPELINE PARTNERS LP , $26.85, down 4.2 pct (1226 ET)

The midstream master limited partnership said it will offer 10 million common units at $26.99 per units, below its closing price of $28.04 per unit on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday.

** GENCO SHIPPING AND TRADING LTD , $3.85, up 11.3 pct (1155 ET)

Shares of the drybulk carrier, which has a high-degree of spot-market exposure, surged after the Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index climbed.

The overall index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry commodities such as iron ore, cement and coal, rose about 6 percent.

The Baltic's capesize index , a gauge for capesizes, which transport 150,000 tonne cargoes, also rose about 8 percent. Genco operates nine capesize vessels.

** EMULEX CORP , $6.79, down 6 pct (1222 ET)

Credit Suisse started coverage of the storage equipment maker with "under perform" rating and a price target of $6, citing a decline in sales of its fibre channel business that accounts for about 80 percent of its revenue.

** METROPCS COMMUNICATIONS INC , $12.04, down 1.8 pct (1221 ET)

** SPRINT NEXTEL CORP , $5.03, down 3.2 pct (1208 ET)

Sprint Nextel is weighing a potential rival bid for MetroPCS, which agreed on Wednesday to a merger with Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile USA, according to sources familiar with the situation.

** HMS Holdings Corp , $27.88, down 13.5 pct (1223 ET)

The company, which provides cost-cutting services to government and private healthcare payers, cut its full-year earnings and revenue outlook for FY12.

** INSMED INC , $6.14, up 15 pct (1350 ET)

Ayer Capital Management reported a passive stake of 9.99 percent in the biopharmaceuticals company.

The company reported lower than expected third-quarter results.

A report in the New York Post said that the company is looking to buy Residential Capital Llc's assets.

ResCap, the mortgage unit of Ally Financial, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May.

The chipmaker cut its third-quarter revenue forecast on Wednesday, citing weak demand for its products as customers cut spending in a weak economy.

** ENDO HEALTH SOLUTIONS , $31.50, down 2.86 pct (1150 ET)

The company forecast 2013 earnings below market expectations its biggest revenue driver, the pain-relieving patch Lidoderm, will face generic competition from Sept. 15, 2013.

** ENERSYS , $35.22, down 2.4 pct (1230 ET)

Stifel Nicolaus downgraded the industrial battery maker's stock to "hold" from "buy."

Diversified U.S. manufacturer 3M dropped its effort to buy Avery-Dennison Corp's office and consumer products business on Wednesday, about a month after U.S. regulators raised anti-trust concerns over the proposed deal.
