SAfrica: Body of striking platinum miner found

JOHANNESBURG -- A strike leader says the body of a mineworker was found near an Anglo American Platinum mine in Rustenburg.

Gaddafi Mdoda claimed the miner had been killed Thursday night by rubber bullets fired by police trying to disperse striking miners, but it was not immediately possible to independently verify his claims. Mary Jane Morifi, a spokeswoman for Anglo American Platinum, the world's top producer or platinum, declined to comment, saying a statement would be issued later Friday.

On Aug. 16 police shot and skilled 34 platinum miners in Marikana, near Rustenburg. Mdoda said the miner's body was found Friday on a hill near the Amplats mine.
