Injecting Humor To Presidential Debates Showcases Online Privacy Issue: Private Access Launches The Great Privacy Debate™ Animations

Firm also launches new SetMyPrivacy app making it easy for consumers to manage privacy settings in Facebook and dozens of other websites that sell personal information

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- "A joke is a very serious thing," said Winston Churchill, and Private Access today released a series of satirical animations on the topic of “Who should you trust to protect your online privacy?” The videos feature zingers between President Obama and Governor Romney, and color commentary by Ron Paul, Sarah Palin, former President Clinton, Rush Limbaugh, Bill Maher, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and others.

The GreatPrivacyDebate (http://www.greatprivacydebate.com/) is a parody, of course. There are several versions of the animated videos. Each pokes fun at the candidates and well-known celebrities regarding growing concerns about violations of consumers’ online privacy and possible solutions:

  • Libertarians and Independents May Prefer – BOTH versions, and the Out-Takes!

“Personal privacy is a serious issue, and one on which leaders of both parties agree something needs to be done. However, in the end consumers need to take assertive action themselves," said Robert Shelton, CEO of Private Access, which builds privacy-related technology. However, the problem is that existing tools offered by sites like Facebook and consumer information marketing sites are frequently confusing and time consuming to use.

But here’s the rub, and it goes well beyond Facebook. Unless consumers take the time to figure out how to correctly set each website’s privacy settings to reflect their personal wishes, they can end up unintentionally having sensitive personal information about themselves or family members available for sale online to anyone with a credit card and an interest. This can take hours, and still leave consumers wondering whether they really did everything correctly. But in a matter of a few minutes time, the new SetMyPrivacy app [http://www.setmyprivacy.com] can handle much of this work for them, initially focusing on Facebook and more than 40 websites that market personal information without consumers’ authorization or consent.

Online media company PlaySocial, Inc. produced the GreatPrivacyDebate videos based on scripts written by Evan Gore, a comedy writer, whose extensive list of credits include work for Disney, Cartoon Network, BET and Nickelodeon. The parodies feature voice impersonations of numerous talented artists arranged through Voice123 and VoiceBunny.com.

The preview version of the new SetMyPrivacy app is being tested beginning with Windows desktop users, with plans in place for releasing it for Mac, iOS and the Android mobile platform.
