SHAWNEE, Kan., Oct. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Premium Nutritional Products, Inc., has initiated a voluntary recall of two lots of ZuPreem® bird food because they may contain higher-than-recommended levels of calcium.
The recall is limited to ZuPreem Medium/Large and Large FruitBlend™ With Natural Fruit Flavors maintenance formula bird foods with the 11/30/13 or 11/13 expiration date codes and lot numbers of 598405052 or 598405072. No other lots or products are affected.
Consistent with this voluntary recall, the company is asking all distributors and pet stores to remove the recalled products from their shelves and asking bird owners with recalled products to dispose of any remaining food and return the packaging to the store where they purchased it for replacement or refund.
The company is taking this action because elevated levels of calcium can make birds sick and, in some cases, may be fatal. Symptoms include decreased activity level or appetite, increase in water consumption or watery droppings. Customers whose birds exhibit these symptoms should immediately contact their veterinarian.
"Nothing is more important than the safety of our products and the health of our customers' birds," said Lyn Huffaker DVM, PhD, Vice President of Technical Services.
"We are taking this matter very seriously and working with our industry partners to resolve all related issues as quickly as possible. We regret this unfortunate situation and any concern or inconvenience it has caused bird owners."
