PITTSBURGH, Oct. 16, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- State Treasurer Rob McCord, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace, representatives of Visa Inc., and students of Allderdice High School today kicked off a statewide effort to improve financial literacy among Pennsylvania teens.
Treasurer McCord and Wallace led students in a high-energy game of Financial Football, a free educational video game and classroom curriculum Visa developed to improve the money management skills of middle and high school students. Visa will distribute the game and curriculum materials to every Pennsylvania middle and high school.
"We need to teach children the fundamentals of personal finance while they are young, because a solid financial education will benefit them as adults. We want them to learn how to manage money properly and make it last in order to have a better shot at long-term economic security," Treasurer McCord said. "This is a great partnership between Treasury, Visa and the NFL, and we're proud to be a part of it."
The free Financial Football game, which simulates an NFL game with financial literacy questions in between downs, is available at practicalmoneyskills.com/football.
"When it comes to financial literacy, practice makes perfect, just as it does on the football field," Treasurer McCord said. "Studies show that as little as 10 hours of personal financial education positively impacts a student's spending and savings habits. Financial Football is a great way to hone these skills."
Treasurer McCord has made financial literacy a priority for his administration. Most recently, Treasury offered a series of free online webinars targeted at adults to answer many of their most common financial questions. The series, called "MoneyWise 101," featured financial professionals with extensive knowledge on topics such as establishing a budget, planning for retirement, and managing debt, among others. Treasurer McCord will participate in a similar event next week at a southeastern Pennsylvania high school with a member of the Philadelphia Eagles team.
