Company Publishes Open Messaging Standards for Its Global Logistics Network
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 14, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Descartes Systems Group (Nasdaq:DSGX) (TSX:DSG), the global leader in uniting logistics-intensive businesses in commerce, unveiled Descartes Community, a cloud-based service, at the annual Descartes Global User and Partner Conference. The new service allows Descartes customers to more deeply interact in their daily business within their industry and find new ways to grow.
To facilitate the widespread adoption of the Descartes Community, Descartes is making its industry leading Standard Messaging Format (SMF) communication protocol publicly available for use, free of charge, to those wishing to connect to Descartes Global Logistics Network (GLN). Designed to help build communities and enable industries to improve their productivity and performance, the Descartes Community service offers members the ability to connect with Descartes GLN members through collaboration tools and automate multiparty processes by utilizing the SMF business document definitions.
"Our customers are telling us that they need solutions that get them better connected to the organizations and individuals they work with every day and to be able to more easily reach across their industry to find and transact with new partners and do it in new ways," said Chris Jones, Executive Vice President Marketing and Services at Descartes. "The Descartes Community service is unique in that it allows organizations and individuals to define their operational and electronic capabilities and roles, provides industry-wide access, and helps brings together the applications and content that are needed every day to make the best decisions across the logistics chain possible and execute them. Using Descartes Standard Messaging Format as a logistics collaboration backbone opens companies up to thousands of potential partners."
As part of Descartes Logistics Technology Platform, the Descartes Community is designed to help companies and individuals in logistics-intensive industries connect at a more meaningful level. It helps to facilitate inter-enterprise business processes, allow members to gain a better understanding of their business partners' capabilities, search for new ones and engage in collaborative activities that improve individual company and industry performance. The backbone of the cloud-based Descartes Community is Descartes' GLN, the world's largest multi-modal network with over 35,000 connected parties. This powerful infrastructure gives members of the Descartes Community the flexibility to create the multi-party communications and processes that they need to extend their command of operations.
For a number of years, Descartes has been working to standardize logistics transactions across the multiple modes of transportation and with leading industry bodies such as IATA. The goal of making these 25 critical logistics and regulatory message standards available to all organizations free of charge is to make communication and collaboration between parties in the logistics industries and their customers and partners as seamless as possible. Descartes invites not only transportation and logistics companies, manufacturers, retailer and distributors, but complementary and competitive logistics solution providers to take advantage of the SMFs to improve their ability to communicate and collaborate.
