Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. Announces Appointment of Peter Mitchell as Chief Consultant for Political and Legislative Programs

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 28, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Cooperative of American Physicians (CAP) is pleased to announce the appointment of its longtime adviser, Peter Mitchell, as Chief Consultant for CAP's political and legislative operations.

The elevation of Mitchell's role at CAP follows the sudden death, on November 19, of Peter Kezirian, CAP's senior vice president of Corporate Strategy & Strategic Development.

Mitchell joined CAP as the organization's political consultant in 2003 and, along with Kezirian, was instrumental in focusing CAP's political and legislative programs to better serve physicians, promote patient safety, and increase access to care. Mitchell has more than 25 years of experience in local, state, and national politics and is highly regarded by business organizations, trade associations, corporate nonprofits, and labor groups in California and nationally. His nonpartisan and issue-education focus has been instrumental in protecting access to care and ensuring that CAP's voice is heard, along with the Californians Allied for Patient Protection (CAPP), throughout the halls of government.

"Peter Mitchell helped build and reform our political and legislative programs for almost ten years now and there will be no interruption since he was already advising us," says Chief Executive Officer James L. Weidner. "In doing so, Mitchell helped make CAP a major, nonpartisan force in politics. I continue to have, as do our physician leaders, the utmost in confidence, respect, and trust in his ability to help CAP navigate challenging times in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. I look forward to Mitchell's new level of service to our members."

Mitchell will be the primary contact for all political issues, candidate elections, legislative issues and questions, CAP's state and federal political action committees (PACs), and fundraising requests. He will continue to work with the physician leaders of both PACs and, in addition to advising Weidner directly in these areas, will direct all legislative consultants and lobbyists in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., as well as CAP's Public Affairs Assistant Elnie Vannatim.
