HOUSTON, Dec. 18, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Harris County Commissioners Court appointed Ret. Col. John D. Kennedy to serve as a member of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority.
Mr. Kennedy's appointment fills the seat of former Port Commissioner Elyse Lanier, who tendered her resignation to the Harris County Commissioners Court this past Friday, indicating her desire to spend more time with her family.
Regarding Mr. Kennedy's appointment, Port Commission Chairman Jim Edmonds said, "On behalf of the Port Commission, we look forward to working with John Kennedy and utilizing his expertise as the commission continues to strive to meet our mandate of job creation and economic prosperity for the region, state and nation."
Kennedy said that he was excited to serve as a member of the Port Commission. "I am really appreciative of the fact that the county commissioners appointed me to the position that I think fits very well with a lot of my military background in transportation and logistics. I am looking forward to it. I think there's no more important institution in our region for making economic development a reality than the port."
Mr. Kennedy's military service, as well as his professional career and community involvement in the greater Houston area spans the course of several decades. The retired U.S. Army Colonel served 27 years in the military focusing on logistics, leadership and management. His military career included commanding a Support Group responsible for the quality of life for a 30,000 person military and diplomatic community.
Mr. Kennedy served as the city manager for Nassau Bay as its chief executive officer for more than 10 years. He focused his energies on the rehabilitation of the city's infrastructure and redevelopment while maintaining quality of life for its citizens and a low tax rate.
Mr. Kennedy is a highly decorated veteran who has received many military awards and honors. He is an active volunteer in the local community, and serves in several leadership positions with his local church and with the USO.
Mr. Kennedy has been married to Brenda, his college sweetheart, for 40 years. They have two adult children and six grandchildren.
