100.3 debuted August 2, 1983. Within 74 days of signing on, WHTZ had climbed from last place to first in the New York Arbitron ratings book. 106.7 Lite FM has 25 years of consistency in New York's Adult Contemporary Music and has created a unique brand in radio that other contemporary stations across the country look to emulate. Q104.3 is New York's heritage Classic Rock radio station playing the most popular Classic Rock by the most popular Classic Rock artists, while 103.5 WKTU-FM was being established as 'the Beat of New York. On February 9, 1996 the station started airing a tape loop of sounds of a heart beating and liners about a new radio station coming. The following day, WKTU was relaunched as 'The Beat of New York 103.5 KTU', playing upbeat, contemporary music and gold-based CHR hits that didn't fit into a traditional "format mold". The station's broadcast transmitter is located on the top of the Empire State Building adding to its image as an iconic New York station. Launched in March 2002, Power 105.1 immediately became one of the most successful urban radio stations in the country, reaching a polyethnic audience that previously had no home on the radio dial.
