Hormel(R) Chili Gives Power to the People as Partner for People's Choice at World's Championship Chili Cookoff

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 11, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hormel® chili, a multi-year partner to the International Chili Society and the World's Championship Chili Cookoff, sponsored the 2012 People's Choice division of the championship held in Charleston, W.Va. The 2012 Hormel People's Choice Chili prize went to Steven Stark of Stark Raven Bad Chili who took home a prize of $1,000 for his Jack Daniel's® and Belgium chocolate infused chili.

The annual World's Championship Chili Cookoff (WCCC) invites the top placing chili cooks from International Chili Society (ICS) cookoffs to contend for the coveted World Chili Champion title. Throughout the course of a weekend, cooks compete in at least one of the four categories: Traditional Red, Chili Verde, Salsa and – new for 2012 – Homestyle. In addition to the four major categories, the WCCC holds several auxiliary contests including awards recognizing the best decorated booths and the annual naming of Miss Chili Pepper and Mr. Hot Sauce.

The chili-loving public was welcomed to Magic Island in Charleston to dazzle their taste buds with spoonfuls of world-class chili. Chili cooks vied for the public's votes and, tent after tent, attendees were wooed by enticing smells, unforgettable flavors and even a few chili fables. The public relished in their opportunity to be a part of the WCCC weekend and undoubtedly walked away with the remnant of championship-style chili lingering sweetly on their lips.

Receiving the highest cumulative votes, Steven Stark and his chili team, Stark Raven Bad, took home the winner's title from the 2012 People's Choice division at the championship.

"The flavor was more intense [than normal]," Stark said of his big win. He attributes the chili's intensity to the shorter window of cooking time, in comparison to how he prepares it in his restaurant. For the size of the public's sample, "you certainly want to be able to pack in as much flavor as possible in to one spoonful," Stark said.
Stark was thrilled to have Hormel Foods as this year's People's Choice partner.

Stark's championship recipe contains, as he described, "all the major food groups." Those major food groups were represented by the recipe's four key ingredients: ground turkey, homemade chipotle peppers, Belgium chocolate and Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. Take those key ingredients and combine them with Hormel chili and you've got a perfect mix to bring home the People's Choice prize.
