64th Annual Christopher Awards to be Presented on May 23, 2013

New York, NY, March 20, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- (http://www.myprgenie.com) -- The Christophersannounced today that the 64th annual Christopher Awards ceremony will be held in New York City on Thursday evening, May 23, 2013. The Christopher Awards salute media that remind audiences and readers, young and old, of their inherent potential to positively influence our world.

Tony Rossi, Director of Communications for The Christophers, says, "These ceremonies are always special because we get to connect with and celebrate the writers, directors and producers who created such outstanding works this past year. Whether the winning projects tell stories that are real or fictional, they affect the way we look at life by awakening in us possibilities that we haven't considered, a belief in ourselves that we may have doubted, or a faith that needs renewal."

To date, more than 1,450 producers, writers, directors, authors and illustrators have won Christopher Awards. Recent winners include "The Help," "Of Gods and Men," "The Blind Side," "The King's Speech," and "Up" in the Filmcategory; "American Experience: Freedom Riders," "Amish Grace," "Locks of Love: The Kindest Cut," and "Flashpoint: Kimberly Dozier and the Army's 4th I.D." in the TV/Cable category; "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, "The Lonely Patient: How We Experience Illness" by Michael Stein, M.D., and "I Shall Not Hate" by Izzeldin Abuelaish in the Books for Adults category; and "You Can Be a Friend," by Tony and Lauren Dungy, "Waiting for the Biblioburro" by Monica Brown and John Parra, "Words in the Dust" by Trent Reedy, and "Shine: Choices to Make God Smile" by Genny Monchamp and Karol Kaminski in the Books for Young People category.

The Christophers, a nonprofit organization founded in 1945 by Maryknoll Father James Keller, is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition of service to God and humanity. The ancient Chinese proverb-"It's better to light one candle than to curse the darkness"- guides its publishing, radio, leadership and awards programs.
