BEIJING (China Content Broadcasting Network Exhibition – Hall: 3; Booth # 3403), March 22, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, announced today its Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA®) silicon and software was selected by Geniatech, a leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) / original device manufacturer (ODM) to develop a USB bus-powered MoCA adapter solution for TVs and consumer electronics (CE) devices.
MoCA is already the de-facto home networking technology used by North American Pay-TV operators. Entropic is expanding MoCA's use into European, Latin American and Asian CE markets by driving innovation with a focus on delivering a superior user experience on any networked TV platform. Geniatech's new USB bus-powered MoCA-to-Ethernet Adapter easily connects service provider or CE devices to the MoCA backbone providing Ethernet-grade connectivity without the need for a separate power supply or to the need to pull new CAT-5 (category 5) wiring throughout the home.
As the only semiconductor company that has developed a USB bus-powered MoCA adapter reference design, Entropic is enabling OEMs / ODMs to bring innovative MoCA-based USB solutions to market. The small form factor and low power makes possible an out-of-sight, simple installation and enables MoCA home networking to be added to any Ethernet-ready CE device or set-top-box (STB) already deployed in a consumer's home. After installation, the MoCA backbone can be used to deliver smooth HD video from over-the-top (OTT) services, enable multi-room DVR (MR-DVR) solutions or simply distribute broadband service to other parts of the home.
"Service providers are looking for quality connectivity solutions to bridge more bandwidth and higher quality viewing to CE devices," said Mr. Fan, general manager, Geniatech. "We see service providers evolving their 'TV anywhere' platforms and therefore need new solutions that can deliver connectivity to every device in the home. In working with Entropic we can build products to connect existing Ethernet-based CE devices to high speed MoCA backbones."
The Geniatech solution utilizes Entropic's EN2584 MoCA 1.1 silicon. The USB bus-powered reference design offers a small form factor, low power (<2.5W) solution at 100Mbps, a lower bill of materials (BOM) since there is no need for an external wall power adapter and greater flexibility due to interoperability with all MoCA-based CE devices. The product also offers optional multi-band support for connectivity with various MoCA based Pay-TV provider networks.
"The need for high bandwidth, quality connectivity solutions to provide optimal over-the-top and Pay-TV premium services requires innovative MoCA solutions that provide the best experience, but also keep the cost of innovation down," said Al Servati, vice president, Marketing, Connectivity Group, Entropic. "We are proud to be working with Geniatech to bring our innovative USB bus-powered MoCA adapter to consumers and service providers, enabling the CE devices to have full wired connectivity to web."
The Geniatech USB bus-powered MoCA adapter is expected to be available in Q2 2013.
Geniatech was founded in 1997 in Beijing with over 15 years of experience in the video and TV industry and working together with PC/TV brand leaders, it has been able to become a global player.
