HOUSTON, April 19, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sharps Compliance Corp. (Nasdaq:SMED) in conjunction with the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA®) announces an earth friendly alternative for collecting and disposing unused medications.
In celebration of Earth Day, Monday, April 22, many of the Dispose My Meds community pharmacies are promoting the program and encouraging proper disposal of unused medications utilizing Sharps' TakeAway Environmental Return System™. Check out the online resource at www.disposemymeds.org to search the nearly 1,600 community pharmacies that provide consumers with the safe disposal option in the form of a community return drop-box.
"Safe and practical disposal programs, such as Dispose My Meds, make a real difference in addressing this growing public health concern," said NCPA CEO B. Douglas Hoey, RPh, MBA. "I commend these pharmacies for taking part for the good of their communities and the safety of their patients. Our hope is that consumers will gain a greater appreciation of the services offered at their local community pharmacy and join us in participating in safe medication disposal."
In an ongoing effort, NCPA is encouraging other community pharmacies to voluntarily sign up for the program.
"It is estimated that nearly 40 percent of all patient medications dispensed go unused, generating over 250 million pounds of harmful materials polluting our rivers, streams and water systems each year," stated David P. Tusa, President and CEO of Sharps Compliance. "Sharps is helping to define innovative solutions which support environmental and social responsibility. This program also provides an opportunity for the local pharmacist to interact and counsel more with their customers to ensure they are properly managing their medications, including improved adherence."
The program utilizes Sharps Compliance's TakeAway Environmental Return System™, which provides consumers with a cost effective solution to effectively and properly dispose of unused medications, in an earth friendly manner. The returned medications are processed via Sharps' waste conversion process thereby keeping them out of landfills and waterways while producing a fuel source used in the generation of electricity.
