TYLER, Texas, June 5, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Glory Black is a native East Texan and has lived in her Tyler, Texas, home for 30 years. She raised both her children and grandchildren in the home, and it has been the center of many family occasions.
Over the years, Ms. Black's home has had its fair share of wear and tear. Termites tunneled into the walls, and the floors became so worn that there were holes in the kitchen and bathroom. Ms. Black now lives alone, and could not safely climb in and out of her shower/tub to bathe. She realized that her home could no longer accommodate her needs without costly repairs and renovations, but on her limited income, she could not afford the expense.
Ms. Black was referred to Austin Bank for financial assistance and qualified for a grant through the Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP grants are awarded by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) and available only through its member institutions, such as Austin Bank, to provide emergency or necessary home repairs and modifications for income-qualified, special needs, and elderly homeowners.
Ms. Black qualified for a $4,960 SNAP grant to repair the termite damage, patch and repaint her walls, level and replace the deteriorated flooring, and modify her bathroom to be handicap-accessible.
"I love all the work that was done in my home, but I think the most useful part is my bathroom," said Ms. Black. "I have new plumbing in my shower, and they converted it so that it is easy to get in and out. Plus, they added some safety features like grab bars in case I lose my balance, and a chair for me to sit. It's just wonderful; I'm a very happy woman."
Austin Bank assisted Ms. Black through the application process and oversaw the renovations.
"Ms. Black was the perfect candidate for the SNAP program, and we are delighted that we could help restore her home and make it safer for her," said Debbie Braune, Vice President and CRA Officer at Austin Bank. "Austin Bank is committed to meeting the needs of the communities we serve, and SNAP allows us to provide assistance to those who need it the most."
Since SNAP was implemented in 2009, more than $6.3 million in SNAP grants have been awarded throughout FHLB Dallas's five-state District of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Texas, to assist 1,260 qualified, special needs families.
