SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 18, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Wellness Center USA, Inc. (OTCQB:WCUI), a Schaumburg, IL - alternative healthcare, medical device solutions and online nutraceutical sales company, today announced that wholly-owned subsidiary Psoria-Shield's flagship product Psoria-Light® has received notice of allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for one of several patent applications, US20110037002 A1. The application can be viewed at:
"Psoria-Light is composed of several exciting new patent pending technologies that together deliver our breakthrough targeted monochromatic narrow-band UVB (NB-UVB) and PUVA (UVA + psoralen) treatments to patients," stated Scot Johnson, CEO and founder of Psoria Shield. "Our targeted UV phototherapy involves the issuance of high dosages of ultraviolet light to only a patient's skin lesions (including psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo), sparring healthy skin." Normally these dosages are emitted directly into contact with the skin or near to it. "However, stray emissions which may occur by errant triggering of the device by the healthcare provider present significant safety challenges, particularly dosages emitted near the patient's eyes or to the patient's healthy skin from excimer laser sources," added Mr. Johnson.
'Safety' is at the top of the list for the regulatory bodies that authorize the sale and use of medical devices, in the United States (e.g. FDA Clearance / Approval) and Europe (e.g. CE Marking). Targeted UV phototherapy devices which treat dermatological skin conditions, such as Psoria-Light and the excimer laser, are no exception. Regulatory standards exist to ensure patient safety for most medical device technologies. Innovations that improve patient safety beyond the standards are highly valued and sought after in the market by the doctors that purchase the devices and who in turn provide services to patients. Psoria Shield understood this challenge and invented a new method for preventing stray emissions.
The design team behind Psoria-Light consisted of several experts in their respective fields, the core group having previously developed over 30 FDA-cleared, CE marked medical devices marketed worldwide. Mr. Johnson stated "I would like to congratulate our team for once again successfully addressing issues related to industrial and mechanical, software, electronics, optics and regulatory design. This incredibly talented team developed and received an FDA clearance for this breakthrough device in less than two years, in contrast to a more typical 4-5 year process and we congratulate their dedication and effort."
Embedded within the Psoria-Light handpiece is a system for detecting human skin without any physical or electrical contact with the patient. If the healthcare provider attempts to initiate a UV emission without the skin detection system sensing the patient skin, no UV emission will occur (as evidenced by a unique audible cue). While the patient skin detection feature can be disabled on a per treatment basis, it is defaulted to 'on'. Through the use of this invention, patient safety is improved over other high intensity UV phototherapy systems and doctors' liability over patient injury is significantly reduced.
Light-based medical technology continues to infiltrate medicine, and those devices employ ever more powerful light sources. Consider many of today's aesthetic medical devices, from fractional CO2 lasers for skin rejuvenation to alexandrite lasers for tattoo removal. Stray emission potential is always a safety consideration for both the healthcare provider and patient.
"Psoria-Shield's design team represents an asset of Wellness Center USA, not only in the advancement of its dermatological product offering, but also as a complimentary development unit to our other subsidiary, CNS-Wellness, in developing a product suite for the treatment of brain disorders," added Mr. Andrew J. Kandalepas, CEO and Chairman of Wellness Center USA Inc.
Psoria-Shield sales are continually expanding domestically, and are now represented in several states across the nation by veteran dermatological sales specialists. Psoria-Light is FDA-cleared, CE marked, and manufactured in Tampa FL under an ISO 13485 quality management system.
