There seems to be nothing out of bounds to bet on in the world of online gambling. And in the U.K., this holds true with the eagerly awaited royal baby too.
The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is due to give birth any day now, and punters are having a flutter on a range of royal baby-related topics, with the child's name being the hot topic.
Odds are highest on names traditionally popular with U.K. royals, and Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has "Alexandra" as favorite, with odds of 7/4. In explanation, Rory Scott, U.K. public relations manager at Paddy Power, told CNBC that Alexandra is Queen Elizabeth's middle name, and also the name of Prince William's godmother.
Other conventional choices, including "Charlotte", "Victoria" and "George", are offered at 5/1. Diana, after William's mother, Princess Diana, is set at longer odds of 12/1.
But betting firms clearly had fun coming up with some of the choices, with Paddy Power offering 500/1 for the names Wayne and Fergie, after the Manchester United soccer superstar, and the nickname of the Premier League team's former manager.
Ladbrokes has the most humorous choices for real risk takers, though. "Tulisa", after the pop star, is set at 500/1, while Psy, the name of the Korean "Gangnam Style" artist, is offered at mammoth odds of 5000/1.
For those who are uncertain, the Queen's parody twitter account has offered "tips" for betting on the royal baby, whose sex is still unknown. The fake Queen backed "Brian" – as in Brian May, the former guitarist in rock group Queen - and "Elizabeth", after the child's grandmother.
But the parody Queen admitted it was a "difficult job" naming the baby.
"One has to think not just of the fashion now, but that this little thing is going to be a monarch in the future. And you can't really have a Head of the Commonwealth called Julie, that's all one's saying," she wrote.
Bookmakers are offering a number of other royal baby-related topics on which to bet. In a tongue-in-cheek reference to Prince Harry's party lifestyle, Paddy Power is taking bets on the age the royal baby will first be photographed in a nightclub, with choices including 16 –or-under or 17-to-18 years of age. Gamblers can also put a stake on the royal baby's future career, the name of its first boyfriend or girlfriend, its weight at birth, the hospital at which it is born, and its first word.
The fake Queen added that she was expecting to make a "killing at the bookies". And bookmakers themselves looking to cash in on the influx of bets. Paddy Power's Scott told CNBC: "That's where a lot of the money is coming in".
