NORCROSS, Ga., July 24, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Comverge, Inc., the leading provider of intelligent energy management solutions for residential and commercial and industrial (C&I) customers, today announced that it played a major role in maintaining a reliable electric grid during the recent heat waves that swept the nation. During the week of July 15, 2013, Comverge successfully executed a record 92 demand response events that curtailed energy use for hundreds of thousands of residential and C&I customers. The number of events, the highest during a single week in Comverge's 30-year history, further demonstrates the increasingly critical role that demand response is playing in the nation's energy mix.
Heat waves across various regions of the United States resulted in record temperatures across several states. The temperatures sent electricity demand soaring in many areas, with New York State's power grid operator recording record levels of demand. As the only demand response provider to deliver programs that support both residential and C&I customers, Comverge was able to help utilities across the country cost-effectively manage the peaks in demand. Comverge managed many of the 92 events using the IntelliSOURCE software platform, which enabled the company to quickly, reliably and cost-effectively manage thousands of data transactions without any interruptions in service.
"Results like this clearly demonstrate the positive impact demand response can have on grid reliability during times of extreme demand," said R. Blake Young, president and chief executive officer, Comverge. "By utilizing demand response resources instead of significantly more expensive peaking power plants, utilities and grid operators are taking a much more cost-effective and sustainable approach to delivering a reliable grid to consumers."
As the market leader in delivering residential demand response programs, Comverge has enrolled 1.2 million customers and deployed more than 5.5 million energy management devices, including Comverge IntelliPEAK digital control units and Comverge IntelliTEMP programmable communicating thermostats.
"The record number of events Comverge delivered shows that demand response is a highly reliable, environmentally friendly energy resource that improves the dependability of the grid and helps drive down the cost of electricity," said Young.
Comverge delivers a comprehensive suite of intelligent energy management solutions that enable utilities, grid operators, and commercial and industrial organizations to optimize their energy usage in order to reduce costs, meet regulatory requirements, and support sustainability initiatives. With 30 years of experience helping customers implement innovative demand-side management programs, Comverge has deployed more than five and a half million energy management devices, recruited over one million residential customers into mass market demand response programs, and served thousands of commercial & industrial customers.
