CSPI Selects the Freescale QorIQ Power Architecture to Enhance Its FastCluster High Performance Embedding Computing Platforms

BILLERICA, Mass., Aug. 14, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CSP Inc. (Nasdaq:CSPI) MultiComputer Division, a leading supplier of commercially developed rugged embedded computers, announced it has selected the Freescale® QorIQ™ Power Architecture® to upgrade its FastCluster platforms. Integrating the new QorIQ™ T Series System-on-a-Chip (SoC) processors into our next generation of FastCluster platforms provides current and new programs with a technology refresh option that improves SWaP performance by a factor two while preserving the software investment made in PowerPC based applications.

The QorIQ™ Advanced Multiprocessing (AMP) Series enables seamless migration of applications previously optimized for the 8641D PowerPC with AltiVec™ architecture. Specifically, CSPI will upgrade their VITA 6U processing blades with T4160 and T4240 processor options. These processors feature the dual threaded, 64-bit Power Architecture® e6500 core with an integrated AltiVec SIMD engine. A single chip T4240, configured with 12 cores running at 1.8 GHz, delivers up to 172.8 GFLOPS of floating point performance to algorithmic-intensive compute applications such as sonar, radar, and image processing. The new FastCluster platforms will also benefit from the enhanced networking capabilities native to the T4240/T4160 architecture, including the10GbE SerDes lanes and 10GbE MAC, to facilitate sensor streaming.

Emulation test data provided by Freescale suggests that not only will customers realize a significant performance boost; they can expect greater power efficiency gained by the new cascading power management scheme and the use of advanced 28 nm process technology to manufacture these parts.

"Moving forward, we are pleased to offer our FastCluster customers the most advanced PowerPC AltiVec architecture optimized for performance-per-watt. Continuing to support code reuse in a Linux SMP and VxWorks AMP/SMP environment, we are able to offer new migration paths to many pro- grams while minimizing NRE and platform changes" said Bernard Pelon, CSPI's Director of Product Research.
