SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 26, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- (VMworld) -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:HILL), a leading provider of SAN storage solutions, today announced the release of a white paper, "Architecting vSphere for the Dot Hill AssuredSAN™ Pro 5000," co-authored by Dot Hill and VMware. The white paper highlights the features of the AssuredSAN Pro 5000, including the system's unique RealStor™ autonomic, real-time tiering capabilities, which make it a highly complementary solution to VMware vSphere environments.
Dot Hill is an active partner with VMware in bringing comprehensive virtualized solutions to customers. The co-authored white paper provides a targeted list of best practices and configuration tips specific to VMware configurations and provides step-by step guidance on configuring the AssuredSAN™ Pro 5000 for VMware hosts on both iSCSI and Fibre Channel interfaces.
The Dot Hill AssuredSAN Pro 5000 can support up to 240 virtual machines (VMs), running IOmark-VM workloads according to data in the latest Evaluator Group IOmark-VM benchmark report. The new IOmark-VM benchmark, the latest storage benchmark in the IOmark suite created by the IOmark organization, tests real-world workloads and measures a standard set of applications running in a virtual environment.
"Dot Hill and VMware are collaborating to educate IT professionals on how to optimize overall performance in vSphere virtualized environments," said Jim Jonez, senior director of marketing, Dot Hill. "Our AssuredSAN Pro 5000 blends a high-performance SSD tier and high-capacity rotating disk drive tiers with our patented RealStor autonomic, real-time tiering software to provide fast, reliable delivery of data in VMware vSphere environments. While other automated tiering systems use batch data migration schemes to sort data based on the previous day's patterns, the AssuredSAN Pro adjusts to dynamically variable workloads throughout the day in real-time, which is exactly what today's virtual data centers need."
As noted in the white paper, the advantage of the Dot Hill AssuredSAN Pro 5000 with RealStor technology is that frequently accessed storage blocks are migrated up to high performance storage tiers in near real time. Every five seconds data blocks in the pool are scored, sorted, prioritized and then migrated to the appropriate tier within the array. Frequently accessed data blocks are migrated to the SSD tier very quickly. Random workloads of virtualized environments will experience significant performance gains when I/O traffic is handled from the high-performance SSD tier of storage on the AssuredSAN Pro.
The paper also notes that Dot Hill AssuredSAN Pro 5000 storage systems are ideal data repositories for any VMware deployment, and are especially suited for clustered deployments, where customers can benefit from the Assured SAN Pro's high availability features, such as redundant components. In addition, distributed, SAN-based storage is a key enabler for clustered servers, and in the case of VMware -- important features such as vMotion.
The paper concludes that the AssuredSAN Pro 5000 is an ideal storage solution in VMware computing environments and has been demonstrated and certified to work seamlessly with VMware vSphere Servers and associated Virtual Machines. In addition to high performance and high availability, the AssuredSAN Pro 5000 delivers the reliability, scalability, flexibility and VMware integration that unleash the full potential of virtualized computing for mission critical applications. Dot Hill, a VMware Technology Alliance Partner, will be conducting live demonstrations of the AssuredSAN Pro 5000 real-time tiering solution at VMworld in the Dot Hill booth #2405. Attendees can witness first-hand the superior performance of a 40-terabyte AssuredSAN Pro 5000 solution, running RealStor tiering software across 96 drives, including eight SSD drives.
AssuredSAN 5000 Pro Series: Seriously Smart, Real-Time Tiered Storage for the Midrange
The AssuredSAN Pro 5000 Series with RealStor software takes tiered storage to a new level — beyond competitors' batch migration and into a new era of autonomic, real-time data tiering. With RealStor, businesses gain the advantage of very high performance SSDs, using them to their maximum benefit, while storing less frequently accessed data on slower, but much less expensive, hard disk drives. Designed for the midrange market, the AssuredSAN Pro 5000 Series is a high-performance, highly available, fully integrated storage solution that delivers consistently faster access to current data with built-in, real-time, autonomic tiered storage and virtualization.
