COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 4, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Math Plus Academy, a Columbus-based math enrichment program, announced it will host a special event for girls to help spark their interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The event is called IGNITE, which stands for Igniting Girls' Natural Inquisitiveness in Technology and Engineering. It will take place on September 8 from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Math Plus Academy Powell.

"For centuries, men have been at the forefront of math, science and technology. Math Plus Academy is helping to smash this stereotype and show young girls that they too can excel in these fields," said Dr. Raj Shah, founder of Math Plus Academy.

Shah opened Math Plus Academy in 2008 in order to offer children, age kindergarten through middle school, the opportunity to explore math and science outside of the classroom. Math Plus Academy was designed to help kids develop a confidence and curiosity about math that will benefit them for a lifetime. All instructors are certified teachers that lead after-school programs; camps and special events like IGNITE.

"If your child is an athlete, you put them in soccer, if they love the outdoors, there is boy scouts. But what if you're child is interested in problem solving, patterns, games and puzzles? I wanted to give parents something to help foster their child's interests in these areas," said Shah.

IGNITE will consist of activities like computer programming, LEGO robotics and a learning session with an inspirational female speaker. For more information about IGNITE visit
