PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 12, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Michael A. Rashid, president and chief executive officer of AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need, has been appointed to the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). AmeriHealth Caritas is a majority-owned subsidiary of Independence Blue Cross; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan holds a minority interest.
The appointment was made by United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and will run through February 28, 2017. The council advises, assists and makes recommendations to Secretary Sebelius, the director of the National Institutes of Health and the director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities on matters related to the activities carried out by, and policies regarding, their respective organizations.
Rashid, a pioneer in Medicaid managed care, has been a senior executive with AmeriHealth Caritas since 1995, becoming president and CEO in January 2010. During this time, ACFC has grown from 300,000 members in two states to more than 4.8 million members in 15 states and the District of Columbia. During his four decades in health care, Rashid has also led Federally Qualified Health Centers, health plans and other organizations dedicated to making quality health care accessible for all.
In addition, Rashid is chairman of Medicaid Health Plans of America's (MHPA) Board of Directors. MHPA is the leading national organization solely dedicated to representing health plans participating in Medicaid managed care.
"It is an honor to be given this special opportunity to help address an important health care challenge for the nation," said Rashid. "I look forward to working with Secretary Sebelius and other government officials to make quality health care more accessible to everyone."
