German Real Wages Decline in 2006: Report

German real wages declined in 2006, rising at a slower rate than inflation, the Federal Statistics Office said Monday.

White-collar wages were up 1.2% in 2006, the slowest pace since the agency began keeping such statistics in 1995. That compared with a 1.3% in 2005.

Blue-collar wages rose 1.5% compared to 1.2% in 2005, the agency said.

At the same time, inflation accelerated by 1.7% in 2006, compared to 2% in 2005.

The agency did not provide an overall average wage-rise figure.
