German Unemployment Rate Rises in Jan.

Germany's unemployment rate jumped in seasonally unadjusted terms to 10.2% from 9.6% the month before, as some 239,000 more people were out of work, the government labor office said Wednesday.

But the statistics looked much better when adjusted for fluctuations in seasonal work such as construction, with the number of jobless dropping by 106,000 and the rate falling to 9.5% from 9.8%.

"The strong economy muted the seasonal rise in unemployment in January," the head of the Federal Labor Agency, Frank-Juergen Weise said.

In seasonally unadjusted terms, a total of 4.247 million people were out of work, up from just over 4 million the month before, the office said. That was still 764,000 fewer than a year ago, one token of Germany's ongoing economic recovery.
