UAL CEO Says Airline Mergers Are Still Necessary

The failed bid by US Airways Group for Delta Air Lines has not changed the case for possible airline mergers, the chief executive of UAL's United Airlines said on Thursday.

"Nothing has changed, as far as I am concerned in the context of the case for consolidation," Glenn Tilton said in a speech at an industry conference.

Tilton said it was still possible that healthy carriers could merge. He also said domestic network airlines, most of the biggest airlines, are financially stable but not yet healthy after major restructuring in recent years.
