Nicolas Sarkozy of France's UMP party won the presidential election with 53.06 pct of the vote against 46.94 pct for socialist candidate Segolene Royal, according to final results issued by France's interior ministry. Official figures showed that just 16.03 pct of the voting electorate abstained from yesterday's vote.

These final results still need to be validated by the Constitutional Council.
