While Fast Money may be your favorite show about money, it is not the first. Jane Wells tell us about the end of an era in money television..
Here’s an excerpt from Jane’s report.
Forget the great minds which move our markets. The man who's really taught America about money is the guy who likes to keep you hanging: "Price Is Right" host, Bob Barker. Today, the 83-year old Barker is bidding his audience a fond farewell, He’s taping his last show which airs in about a week.
For 35 years Barker has made money... funny! And, along the way he's made boatloads of dough for producers, CBS (CBS) and himself. After all, "The Price Is Right" is the highest rated daytime game show.
His fans tell us the show has been a crash course in the fundamentals of money. Barker told reporters some mathematics professors make students watch this show to learn probabilities; an education any investor could use.
It was also a program that taught you strategy and pricing. Heck, sounds like an "econ" class. Except it wasn't boring. Bob Barker says one secret to his success was that he listened to people, then tried to create, “spontaneous entertainment" with them.
In case you’re wondering CBS hasn't found a replacement yet, and the show will be in re-runs this summer.
Barker says if they don't find the right person by fall, he'll be willing to fill in for a while. Meantime he expects to be bored with no job...says he's looking forward to it.
Freemantle Media currently owns the show, the same folks who bring you "American Idol".
