Celebrity Apprentice was an amazing experience! I had been a fan of the show for years, so when I got the call from Donald Trump and Mark Burnett to compete on the first celebrity
version I was very excited. Coming from a big family I’ve always been very competitive, but in a family no one ever gets fired! In business people get fired all the time; they can lose the sale or fail to get a promotion. And in show business, to be a success, you must be able to deal with rejection and just keep on going. Resilience is the mark of a truly successful person!
I have always been very entrepreneurial. My mother ran a dancing school in our garage and a beauty shop in our kitchen, so I learned at an early age to be creative and use what you have to get what you want! My success in show business led to a second career as a producer. Being a producer sounds so glamorous, but in reality the producer is the person who makes sure everything gets done, and if is not getting done, she does it herself! Sound like the job of a mother? It is! As the mother of two boys, 12 and 13, I know how many hats a working mom must wear throughout her day.
The tasks we were assigned on Celebrity Apprentice were perfect for me -- being part of a team, using my skills to help the team move forward, conceptualizing and executing plans – I love doing these things. Working with Donald Trump is not much different from working for studio moguls. The good ones are always hard task masters, but they also understand and appreciate the creative process. A successful businessman recognizes his strengths and weaknesses, and finds good people to complement his strengths.
I have enjoyed a third career as a New York Times best-selling author of eight books and health and lifestyle advocate. When I started my own website in 1999, people thought it would be just a celebrity website, but I had a much different vision. As an author I have so much to say that I knew I wanted to use my site to put out information and help people realize their dreams. I developed www.marilu.com as a site that would allow my members to interact with me, and each other to become a true cyber community, one that is self-sustaining and growing. Please come and see what I do there everyday to empower women and make this world a better place.
My career as a health advocate led me to the amazing organization that I chose as my charity on Celebrity Apprentice. The Physicians’ Council for Responsible Medicine is a group of doctors and health professionals who advocate a new direction for health care in this country. Health care has become an industry that treats disease rather than the patient. This has distorted our medical system to the point that not only does it waste billions of dollars each year; it does so without improving our health! PCRM is trying to correct this problem by educating doctors and the public about behaviors that can cure and prevent disease. I am a great believer in nutrition, detox, and exercise, areas usually neglected by conventional medicine. I urge everyone to visit their website at www.pcrm.com to learn for yourself how exciting good health can be!
