CNBC investigates in a one-hour original documentary, "For the Love of Money: The Death of Seth Tobias", reported by CNBC Senior Correspondent Scott Cohn. For the first time, CNBC tells the real story of a death that shocked Wall Street and the world.
He was a young, successful hedge fund manager with a wide following. But Seth Tobias' personal life was as volatile as the markets. The founder of the $300 million Circle T Family of Funds was found dead in the swimming pool of his Jupiter, Florida mansion on Labor Day. He was just 44 years old. His death was already the subject of intense speculation when a man claiming to be Tobias' personal assistant came forward with a wild claim: Billy Ash said he had a murder confession on tape from Tobias' wife, Filomena. The alleged confession is at the center of a bitter estate battle, and a bizarre tale of sex, drugs and greed. Was Seth Tobias a victim of murder, or of his own demons? And how far will people go for the love of money?
