ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. April 28, 2008---How would you like to put our money where your mouse is?
Registration for the second "CNBC.com Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge" is now open at CNBC.com. Contestants will compete for a grand prize of $500,000 with a first prize of $250,000, a second prize of $100,000 and three third place prizes of $50,000. The prizes are awarded to those with the largest portfolios as a sum of equities, currencies and cash.
In addition, there will be 10 weekly prize winners with prizes that include a pair of tickets to the Super Bowl XLIII, nine holes of golf with Annika Sorenstam and a package at her Academy, a seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker and a getaway to Turks and Caicos at the Grace Bay Club (complete list below). The weekly prizes are awarded to one player each week who has the biggest percentage gain from Friday (close of market) to Friday (close of market).
Trading begins May 12, 2008 on CNBC.com and will last 10 weeks, ending July 18, 2008. Each contestant can only play one CNBC.com account; each account will get five (5) portfolios of $1 million "CNBC Bucks." This year, CNBC.com is introducing a new element to the contest: each portfolio is allocated $900,000 "CNBC Bucks" to trade stocks and $100,000 "CNBC Bucks" to trade currencies. In last year's CNBC.com Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge, currencies weren't traded. For a complete set of contest rules and to register for the CNBC.com Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge visit www.milliondollar.cnbc.com
For stock trading, participants are provided with a fictional trading account, $900,000 in "CNBC Bucks," and the ability to trade individual stocks on the NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX exchanges. Contestants can trade currencies in virtual real-time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trading stocks can be done any time, but orders are netted out and processed once each trading day after the market closes. Individuals can be awarded bonus money into their trading accounts throughout the contest by answering six (6) trivia questions each day that will appear on CNBC.com and referring friends that register to play.
With the world currency markets so volatile, the CNBC.com Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge will familiarize individuals with how to trade currencies. In addition to hand on experience with trading, there will be a 10-part educational series about the foreign exchange markets.
