Sycamore Hill: Dirty Laundry

Here's the second part of today's installment--Tom threatens, Mayvene stands her ground, and MacGregor remains incomprehensible. I can hardly type this I'm so tense.

ACT II

Scene C

FADE IN:

INT. LAUNDRY ROOM

MAYVENE is loading laundry into a washing machine.

TOM, JOANN’S loser son, ENTERS, carrying a load

of wash and a boom box. They make eye contact. TOM

starts up the boom box and it plays a vulgar

Eminem song. MAYVENE tenses and walks over to turn the

boom box down. He turns it up, she turns it down, and

they face off. MACGREGOR, the handyman, ENTERS.

He’s carrying tools as if he’s come to fix something.

MAYVENE

(trying to be calm)

Oh, hello, Mac.

MACGREGOR

Hi ya, Mayvene.

He notices the tension, and stares at TOM.

MACGREGOR

What’s goin’ on here?

TOM

Nothing, you nimrod.

MACGREGOR

Lad, what did ya just call me?

TOM

I’m not your lad, you ass.

MACGREGOR

(brogue gets thick)

Mayvene, this maggot botherin’ ya?

MAYVENE

What?

MACGREGOR

Was he threatenin’ ya?

She looks at him as though he’s speaking Swahili.

MACGREGOR

(louder, exasperated)

Are ya all right?

MAYVENE

Oh! Yes, yes, I’m fine. Thank you.

TOM laughs, and starts to load his laundry

with a vengeance.

TOM

What a pair you make.

MACGREGOR

Listen, boy, which is what I’m gonna

call ya, because that’s how y’act.

You may frighten the old ladies in

this complex, but you don’t frighten

me.

TOM turns to face his challenger.

TOM

What, are you going to beat me up

with a pipe cleaner?

MACGREGOR

A lead one, if you don’t watch yer

step.

TOM

Bring it on, you skirt wearin’

scumbag.

MACGREGOR

Any time.

MAYVENE

Cut it out, both of you, or I will

call the manager. And Tom, one

more call could get you kicked out of

here. I hear you got your second warning

after leaving your mother’s porch light on

after 10pm and it was shining RIGHT INTO

GERTIE’S LIVING ROOM. Diane can’t save

you this time.

MACGREGOR

(very interested)

What about Diane?

TOM

Shut up.

MACGREGOR

You stay away from her.

TOM gives them both a murderous look. But he doesn’t say or do a thing. Mayvene is right. One more call…

TOM

You’re all idiots. I’m trapped in

AARP hell.

HE abandons his wash and prepares to leave.

POLICE OFFICER DAN ENTERS.

POLICE OFFICER DAN

Tom?

TOM

What?

POLICE OFFICER DAN

I need you to come with me to the station

to answer some questions about Bill’s

death.

TOM

What the hell?

POLICE OFFICER DAN

Don’t argue with me this time, Tom.

TOM looks ready to run, but reconsiders. He and DAN EXIT.

MACGREGOR and MAYVENE watch, stunned.

MACGREGOR

(to MAYVENE)

Y’all right?

MAYVENE

What?

FADE TO BLACK

Up next: We meet the oddly-racist Viktor, Mayvene spells more words, and free drugs create pandemonium.
