Cup Stacking Turning Into Major Sport

Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal had a story on one of my favorite sports: Cup stacking.

Kids basically take a plastic cups and have to stack them into pyramids and then take them down. There’s a World Sports Stacking Championship, young pre-teen athletes who are worshipped and a company called Speed Stacks that make the official equipment.

But no blog could do justice without the tremendous video.

Here’s Emily Fox’s record of 7.43 seconds, which stood for four years.

And here's current record holder Steven Purugganan in real time. Keep in mind, this isn’t even his record attempt (5.93 seconds), which happened in January.

So my question is: Do I bring my kid up to be a cup stacker or a spelling bee champion?
