CNBC and Allianz Launch Competition to Find ‘Green’ Entrepreneurs

The search begins today to find Europe’s green entrepreneurs for a new TV series to be screened on CNBC later this year. Called ‘The Good Entrepreneur’ the new business competition, backed by business and financial news channel CNBC and financial services provider Allianz, aims to find the entrepreneur with the best eco-business concept which is sustainable, responsible and innovative.

Budding entrepreneurs across Europe with a green idea or business plan for a product or service are encouraged to enter online at www.goodentrepreneur.com.

The winner of ‘The Good Entrepreneur’ will receive a prize package worth more than €250,000 which includes financial support, advertising on CNBC and business support from Allianz. The competition closes on 31 July, with three finalists named in August and ‘The Good Entrepreneur 2009’ winner announced in November.

Support for entrants on the website will be offered by star business names including Martha Lane Fox, co-founder of Lastminute.com; Stelios Haji-Ioannou, chairman of easyGroup; Sebastien Baerhold, CFO and co-Founder, Amiando and Nandan Nilekani, co-Chairman and co-Founder Infosys. Top business leaders from Allianz, General Electric International, LinkedIn and Microsoft International, alongside a leading professor from University of Oxford’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, will choose three finalists and select the winner.

The TV series will track the progress of the finalists as they receive mentoring and advice from leading entrepreneurs. The series, which will culminate in one of the finalists being announced as the winner, will be broadcast across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia on CNBC in the autumn.

The Good Entrepreneur website will engage leading business schools, business leaders and entrepreneurial organisations to create a new on-line community that helps entrepreneurs take great ‘green’ ideas and transform them into solid, responsible business plans.

The competition is a result of a strategic partnership between Allianz, one of the leading global financial services providers and CNBC, the leading pan-EMEA business and financial news channel. It aligns with Allianz’s sustainable development strategy and commitment to the pursuit of a sustainable world, through combining long-term economic value, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

Steve Sedgwick, presenter at CNBC said: “The Good Entrepreneur competition is going to potentially change the life of an entrepreneur for ever, bringing the next big green business idea to life right in front of a TV audience. If you have a green business idea that can withstand the scrutiny of some of the world’s best and toughest entrepreneurs then we want to hear from you.”

Dr. Steven Althaus, Vice President Global Brand Management and Strategic Partnerships at Allianz: “We are proud to partner with CNBC and to be able to drive one of our key strategic topics, sustainable development. At Allianz we work on the principle that with knowledge comes a responsibility to act. With this in mind the unique prize of The Good Entrepreneur competition, which includes Allianz expertise to the winner, will hopefully result in establishing a sustainable business.”
