One-On-One With U.S. Open Champ Lucas Glover

A day after Lucas Glover took home the US Open title, we sat down with the 29-year-old champ to talk business.

Darren: We counted four Nikelogos on Tiger Woods yesterday. Counting your bag, we had you at nine Nike logos. You play with all Nike clubs too and a Nike ball. How did you become such a company man?

Glover: Two and half years ago, Nike and I got together and decided that’s what I wanted to do and that’s the equipment I wanted to play and they’ve been great. Their marketing and everything is top notch. They are huge company. They do a great job helping us out and we help them out by getting their product out there.

Darren: Did they tell you they’d use you in their marketing now? A lot has been made of the prototype putter you were using.

Glover: I hope they’ll use me. Yesterday probably helped. It’s a great putter. I think they’re getting ready to start the big release and it should be a popular item. I don’t even know the name of it yet. But they’re going to stamp a name on that and put it out there for the public.

Darren: The other deal we’ve seen you have is MarquisJet on your bag.

Glover: Yeah, I actually debuted a (MarquisJet) towel last week, believe it or not.

Darren: I always like to do this. You’re on top of the world right now. Take your pick for your next endorsement. If you could have any one, what would it be?

Glover: Well, I’ve played some golf with the Bass Pro Shop guys and met (the owner) Mr. (John) Morris and played a few holes with his son. They’re great people and I’m a big fisherman, so I’ve spent a lot of money in their stores. Hopefully, we can work something out.

Darren: You just won $1.35 million, what are you going to do with it?

Glover: I got a couple plots of land I got to get paid off. Maybe I’ll start thinking about a second home or a little dream vacation spot on Sea Island or up in the mountains. We don’t know. We haven’t gotten that far yet, but we’re working on it. It makes things a bit more comfortable. We just got done renovating some of the house. Maybe we can pick out another room to do.

Darren: Don Cooper, your caddie, also gets a nice piece of the pie.

Glover: I hope it makes him feel good. He told me a couple years ago that for our next win he was going to buy a nice car, maybe a ‘Vette, so I’m going to hold him to that and see if he comes through.
