Pops & Drops: Patriot Coal, American Express...

Following are the day’s biggest winners and losers. Find out why shares of Patriot Coal and Supervalu popped while American Express and Office Depot dropped.

POPS (stocks that jumped higher)

Patriot Coal (PCX) popped 3%. The company’s second quarter loss was less than expected, helped by its acquisition of Magnum Coal last year. - I'd stay with this trade, says Tim Seymour. It still looks good.

Supervalu (SVU) popped 2%. The company announced plans to sell 36 stores in Utah, most of them operate as Albertson’s. - I like this stock, says Karen Finerman.

Tenet Healthcare (THC) popped 13%. The company increased its full year guidance due to stronger cost controls. - That's a nice pop, says Karen Finerman.

Textron (TXT) popped 17%. Although the company posted a loss, investors liked hearing that the business jet market was stabilizing. - Can anyone say speculator, chuckles Joe Terranova.

DROPS (stocks that slid lower)

American Express (AXP) dropped 2%. Fox-Pitt Kelton downgraded the company to ‘in line’ from ‘outperform’. - I think the better trade is Mastercard, counsels Guy Adami, though not at current levels.

Office Depot (ODP) dropped 18%. The company’s second quarter loss was worse than expected. - I wouldn't touch this stock, reveals Joe Terranova.

Manitowoc (MTW) dropped 11%. Although the firm posted better-than-expected profits, sales fell 13%. - It's not a good story in the short term, explains Tim Seymour.

Coach (COH) dropped 2%. Profits fell 32% and revenue missed analysts’ estimates. - I wouldn't chase this stock, counsels Guy Adami.
