Highest Market Caps Today vs. 1999

The Dow crossed above 10,000 today for the first time in over a year. 10 years ago, the Dow closed above 10,000 for the first time on March 29, 1999. Here are the top 20 market caps of the S&P , based on the S&P components at their respective points in time (data from Capital IQ).

Some observations:

  • Today's leader, Exxon , has a market cap that is ~75% of what Microsoft led with in March 1999, but has roughly doubled in the past 10 years
  • GE was also bigger then than Exxon is today and has lost more than 50% of its market cap in the past 10 years
  • Wal-Mart remains in the #3 slot with roughly the same market cap
  • Google , JP Morgan Chase (was two companies in 1999) , and Apple are now in the top 10 market caps but were not even on the list in 1999
