November Winners & Losers

U.S. stocks are on track to close November with their best monthly performance since July 2009, as investors' optimism for an economic recovery continues to push some of the major market averages to their best level this year.

Since the beginning of the month, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is leading the gains, up 6.4%, followed by the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite, rising 5.6% and 4.5% respectively.

What follows is an overview of three major U.S. indices this month in relation to their historical performance, along with a peek at some of the best and worst performing stocks.

Dow

  • Currently on track for its best month since July 2009 when it gained 8.6%
  • On track for its best November since 2001 when it gained 8.56%
  • On average, the Dow has increased 1.37% during December and an avg. gain of 1% during December when November was a positive month
  • On average, the Dow has increased 1.74% during December, when January through November has been a positive period
  • On average, the Dow has increased 1.61% during December, when the Dow has gained more than 15% from January through November

S&P 500

  • Currently on track for its best month since July 2009 when it gained 7.4%
  • On track for its best November since 2002 when it gained 5.71%
  • On average, the S&P has increased 1.38% during December, and an avg. gain of 1.2% during December when November was a positive month
  • On average, the S&P has increased 2.27% during December, when January through November has been a positive period
  • On average, the S&P has increased 1.68% during December, when the S&P has gained more than 15% from January through November

NASDAQ

  • Currently on track for its best month since September 2009 when it gained 5.64%
  • On track for its best November since 2005 when it gained 5.31%
  • On average, the NASDAQ Composite has increased 1.9% during December, and an avg. gain of 2.43% during December when November was a positive month
  • On average, the NASDAQ Composite has increased 2.61% during December, when January through November has been a positive period
  • On average, the NASDAQ Composite has increased 3.45% during December, when the NASDAQ has gained more than 15% from January through November
