In 1982, how did Chicago police notify citizens that Extra Strength Tylenol capsules had been poisoned?

  1. They called every private phone number in the Chicago white pages
  2. They drove through the city and shouted warnings over a loudspeaker
  3. They left flyers on the doors of over 500,000 apartment buildings
  4. They sent telegrams to every private residence in the city

In September 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Extra Strength Tylenol. The capsules had been spiked with 65 milligrams of potassium cyanide, 10,000 times the amount necessary to kill a human being. Once the deaths had been traced to the product, police responded by driving through Chicago, street by street, and broadcasting a warning to the citizenry. The incident quickly became a national news story, and Johnson & Johnson issued a full nationwide recall of all 31 million bottles in circulation. To this day, the case remains unsolved.
