MINNEAPOLIS, May 10, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Mary E. Larscheid, a PhD graduate of Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, recently published a new book about understanding anger in children. The book, titled "Educating Elementary Children in Regards to Anger: A Cognitive Behavioral Approach," is based on the dissertation she wrote while at Capella, where she earned a PhD in Human Services. More than 37,100 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 32 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs, and 48 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs.
Published by Lambert Academic Publishing in early 2010, Larscheid book is specifically written for mental health professionals that serve children with anger issues. It is based on a pilot program in which she implemented a 12-week anger intervention program for 80 students in grades four through six in order to analyze the relationship between anger and social skill behaviors.
"I wrote this book so that people who work with children with special needs are aware that you can't do just a blanket approach with every child," Larscheid said. "Teachers are great at understanding that children learn differently, but it's important to know that in a therapeutic setting, it's just as important that you look at the overall status of every child, and treat that child with a very individualized approach." Larscheid, who worked for 15 years as a school social worker, now oversees Children's Therapeutic Services and Support, a program of the Albert Lea School District in southern Minnesota. The program is for children who have mental health needs and are in special education programming, which allows them to receive mental health services right in their schools. In addition, Larscheid provides direct services and supports other social workers at various schools in the Albert Lea School District.
"The assessment tools I used in my dissertation, which is what I based my book on, I use in my day-to-day work when conducting assessments of the children I treat," Larscheid said.
