Talk to Me, Goose—Today Is Top Gun Day

I'm married to a former Navy pilot. Our son wants to join the Marines. They quote "Top Gun" all the time. Like, all the time.

They are not alone.

Today is "Top Gun Day."

Twenty four years ago this weekend, the Jerry Bruckheimer classic starring Tom Cruise hit theaters.

Men's volleyball was never the same.

"I feel the need, the need for speed!" entered the pop culture lexicon almost immediately.

The film went on to earn more than $350 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Domestically, at $177 million, it's the number two film in the "Pilot/Aircraft Genre." You won't believe which movie is in first. "Pearl Harbor", another Bruckheimer spectacular, but I bet you couldn't quote one line from that movie if you're wingman depended on it.

And you can be my wingman any time...

Classic lines from "Top Gun" include "Call the ball!", "Talk to me, Goose", and my personal favorite, "You'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog sh*t out of Hong Kong!" The movie has become such a cultural icon that even Quentin Tarantino has analyzed it (warning: language, content, just about everything).

How many films have so much quotable dialog, especially when they're not supposed to be a comedy?

The webpage for the movie's "memorable quotes" goes on and on.

Why have a Top Gun Day?

This is what I call a target rich environment.

Supporters even have their own Facebook page where they explain that Top Gun Day is "kinda like talk like a pirate day, only way cooler." ?

Editor's Note -- 'Cause we know you want it, here it is.
