Given how well things have been going for Ford, it would be easy to say the new Explorer SUV will do well simply because Ford is the hot brand right now.

And while there's no doubt the re-designed Explorerwill get plenty of attention because more buyers are putting Ford on their shopping list, that would be selling the company's new SUV short.

The Explorer is a huge improvement over the previous Explorer due to a powerful combination of a better design, vastly improved fuel efficiency, and more features drivers will want.

* Better Design: The new Explorer is a huge step up over the previous generation which was far from inspiring. What stands out about the effort the designers put into this Explorer is not only the more contoured exterior but also a far more refined interior. Explorer designer Mel Bettencourt has taken the SUV from boxy to bold by moving the wheels further out while adding a seamless look from the grill to the rear bumper.

* Better Fuel Efficiency: Ford says The new Explorer is 20% more fuel efficient than the previous model and with the Eco Boost engine, the 2011 Explorer will get mileage in line with models like the 2010 Toyota Camry. You get the idea. The new Explorer will have mileage that is not hindrance to sales. Let's be honest, SUV sales will always suffer if gas prices rise. But with better mileage, the Explorer will be in a better position to sell when gas prices rise.

* More Features: From 2nd row inflatable seat belts to the MyFord Touch system, to blind spot monitoring, the new Explorer is packed with technology and features. This is another example of Ford maximizing its strategy of putting more content in its new models and giving buyers a reason to pay more. Will all the content win over buyers? Probably not. But the majority of features will be welcomed and help Ford get more profit per vehicle.

Bottom line: The new Explorer is big improvementfrom the previous generation and will extend the winning streak for Ford.
