"Large amounts of sugar are excreted on a daily basis by type-two diabetic patients especially amongst the upper end of our aging population," Gilpin writes. He's taken those fluids, including some from his own diabetic grandmother, and bottled Gilpin Family Whiskey, a single malt.
Unfortunately (fortunately?), it's not on the market. Yet.
Gilpin did hold a tasting this summer. The whiskey reportedly smells like whiskey, according to one blog. I can't find anyone who actually tasted it. Ironically, Gilpin says, "Diabetics definitely shouldn't drink whiskey, and it's not intended to be consumed by diabetics, only produced by them." One more thing for Bret Michaels to be bummed about.
Finally, Gilpin says he's not in this for the commercial prospects, but to provoke discussion with the medical community about lifestyle choices and diabetes. However, "the idea of old people's homes with distilleries in the garden is a funny one."
