On Thursday, September 30th at 9PM ET, CNBC presents “Liquid Assets: The Big Business of Water,” a CNBC Original reported by CNBC’s Michelle Caruso-Cabrera that takes viewers across America and abroad going inside this deadly crisis threatening our future. Many believe this crisis could be the cause of wars, while others believe it is the business opportunity of a lifetime. With only 3% of the world’s water existing as fresh water, nearly every continent in the world is feeling the affects of the global water crisis, and many lack the basic infrastructure needed for delivery.
In this one-hour documentary, CNBC, First in Business Worldwide, will travel to the American West where seven states compete for the same water from the Colorado River Basin. How long can it sustain such a demand? And who will win this battle between the farmers and cities. Caruso-Cabrera also goes to Alaska and Wisconsin, where there is an abundance of water. These states, both facing economic hardships, are looking for how they can capitalize on their excess supply. And, CNBC takes viewers to Chile where in the south water rights are bought and sold, and to the north it is one of the driest places in the world. CNBC investigates whether Chile has the answer to the public vs. private water debate.
Did you know it takes 300 liters of water to produce a mug of beer, 100 liters per glass of milk and 16,000 liters for every hamburger? CNBC goes to Miller Coors, where like many companies, water is everything…from brewing to pasteurizing to shipping—it’s the fuel that runs the factory. CNBC looks at what happens to the cost of doing business as the water supply get more and more strained and shows how these companies are making major changes to improve their water usage.
CNBC also takes a look at the longstanding debate over bottled water. Thirty billion plastic water bottles are sold in the U.S. every year. Caruso-Cabrera speaks with comedian and critic Lewis Black who thinks it is ridiculous to pay for water bottled when you can get it for free. But, there is no question that the industry has succeeded with growth rates in excess of 20% for most of the past two decades…not even the recession could stop its growth.
